BLADES: PRE-9/11 BLADE ARCS AND BRIDGES

ARTIST STATEMENT

In the 1990s, Linda Stein began to work on a series called Blades, sculptural works that incorporated machete blades. She hand-dulled her machete blades, bent them, curved them, and in the end rendered them harmless. By depriving them of their destructive potential and turning them into something soft and pliable, these works now possess a tactile nature. Blades Arcs and Bridges are 3D collages. Gradually, Stein transitioned from working with the actual steel machete blades to using its shape with other materials. The "bridge" is usually a wood branch.
